COLUMBUS, OH — District final Saturday at Ohio Dominican opened with a bout that was bound to be a first-ever title for either participating team.
It was a debut appearance for Genoa Christian in this spot, given it was the Lions’ first eligible season in OHSAA play and the Flames were looking to snap a third consecutive loss in the district title game.
A 9-0 Flames start to begin the contest was a preview of how the remainder of the game would play out, as Shekinah Christian never trailed and their strong defensive effort led to a 46-31 victory towards their first Division VII district championship.
“This means so much, just what we have been through the last couple of years,” Shekinah Christian head coach Keith Lambert, now in his 11th season with the Flames, said after the game. “It was a surprise season for us two years ago and then last year, Austin Helmuth went down. Then when Jayce [Yoder] went down [this year], it felt like deja vu. But the adversity these guys overcame, to come through and play for each other, it means everything.”
