Newark uses a huge defensive effort to take home district title 27
COLUMBUS, Ohio - - In an old school OCC matchup for a district championship, it was Newark and their dominant defensive efforts that allowed the Wildcats to add another district championship to their collection. They held Gahanna Lincoln to 16 second half points and came away with a 54-37 win.
“I thought we ran really good halfcourt offense compared to what we ran on Monday against Delaware [Hayes],” Newark head coach Jeff Quackenbush said about his team. “We knew we’d have to make it a possession basketball game, we didn’t want them to be able to run up and down.
The Wildcats did just that, slowing down the offense of Gahanna in the final 16 minutes of the game, forcing them to shoot 35% from the field in the second half.
“We knew they were trying to drive it on us, they’re great at running the Princeton [offense] and getting back cuts,” coach Quackenbush started about the adjustments the team made. “So were we over helping on that, we wanted to be more active in gaps.
