The Lions deliver their second straight lopsided MOCAL win

DELAWARE, OH - Genoa Christian may be one of the best programs in the state that fans are unfamiliar with, but after a second straight sound victory, it’ll be sooner versus later that the area becomes familiar with the success the Lions are building.
On Monday, the Lions visited a previously undefeated Delaware Christian for a MOCAL contest and were able to go home early after a running clock that began in the third quarter expired with a 72-39 final score. It was a slightly closer contest than their first league win, which was a 92-22 victory against Liberty Christian on Friday.
As they play in their first-ever eligible OHSAA season, head coach Sam Smith who is in his fifth year with the program, has done an admirable job of developing talent while building a schedule against larger schools to prepare for their first shot at postseason titles in Division VII.
“The unique thing with the guys we have is they want to play the best, so we try to load our schedule with good opponents who one, can show our weaknesses and two, challenge us,” Smith said. “I feel like that prepares us for our league. But when we go against our league and we have a scoreboard [like tonight], our team in the locker room is nitpicking about what we can do better and I love that. Our guys are great at self reflecting and it’s cool to have a team like that.”
From the stands, there wasn’t much to nitpick against the Lions who were in firm control essentially from the opening tip as a 25-8 lead in the first period led to a 59-15 halftime margin which triggered the running clock to start the second half.
