Five things we learned on opening night
Central Ohio basketball got off to a roaring start on Friday
It seemed poetic for the high school basketball season to start on December 1. With the late start, the focus was solely on hoops in the Columbus area. Due in part to Ohio State losing for a third-straight season (sigh) to Michigan, football was a bit on the back burner last night, unless you are a Bishop Watterson fan, which allowed all focus to be put on the teams and players competing on opening night.
Here are five things that we learned in opening night.
1. Gahanna Lincoln has elite guard play and will be a contender
Good guards win games. Gahanna Lincoln has a handful of good guards. We were really impressed with the decision making and overall unselfishness of Gahanna’s guards in their win at Westerville South. The Lions are a deep team that played 10 players last night. The ability to have a half dozen players that can handle the ball, create offense, make great decisions, hit shots and play tough defense is a luxury.
2. Westerville North is ready to contend right now
Opening up the season with a 38-point win over Linden-McKinley, Westerville North looked like a team that means serious business. The Warriors have a game wrecker in Vari Adams in the front court and one of Ohio’s most talented backcourts in Micah Young, Tai Perkins, Eyon Robinson and Tyson Perkins. No game will be easy against this squad. Tuesday night at Gahanna Lincoln will be one of the best games all of next week and an early test for both teams to see where they stand.
