City League Report: A Wild Week
Shakeups over the last week has changed the City League south landscape
COLUMBUS, Ohio - - A classic City League south slugfest and the north division officially crowned a new king for the first time in the school’s history led the headlines of the past week, but, another shakeup for the top spot in the south is what most people will focus on. Most people thought the City League title game was all but set, but nobody told one mentally tough team from 1160 Ann St. and they may have crushed one school’s championship game dreams.
Check out the latest on the City League championship game and everything else that happened over the past week in the most unpredictable league in Central Ohio, the Columbus City League.
City League North:
Centennial (17-3; 13-0) is headed to East High School on February 21st, clinching their first City League north division title in the history of school and will represent their side in the City League title game. This ends the reign of the Northland Vikings (13-6; 11-2) who has represented the north for the past three seasons. The Stars are a perfect 13-0 in league play with one more game, senior night at Beechcroft, remaining, looking to finish their City League schedule unblemished.
Who they may face in the title game took a turn on Monday evening.
Elsewhere in the north, the Vikings will finish as runner-ups, with their only losses coming to Centennial. Senior Diante James remains one of the most consistent players in the entire City League and is pouring in over 16 points per game while junior forward Owen Mburugu and sophomore guard Vandell Slade are key contributors.
East High School (8-8; 7-6) are led by the scoring machine Daeshawn Fiore, who is scoring at an over 23 point per game clip and will once again land himself a first team All-City League north selection.
The Beechcroft Cougars (8-11; 7-6) are tied in the division with the Tigers and have found their flow late in the season, winning five of their last six ball games while head coach Raylon Almon has tested this squad with a difficult schedule all season. Forward Rueben Holmes is still putting up huge numbers, including 23 points against International Monday while his senior teammate Adbul Kamara is putting up solid numbers as well. Freshman point guard Aiden White has shown flashes of being the best passer in all of the City League, his progression will be one to watch over the next three seasons.
