Bishop Watterson 56 , Marysville 49 - Game Recap
WATTERSON CAPTURES DISTRICT TITLE BEHIND ZIEL’S 32-POINT PERFORMANCE
COLUMBUS, Ohio - - Everything a fan could want, this contest had, the game had runs, big shots, takeover moments from the best players and overtime. In the most action-packed and emotional game of the day, Bishop Watterson came away with the hard fought 56-49 victory behind a 32-point performance from sharpshooter Sophie Ziel.
Getting their first district title since 2004 was not going to be easy, with a talented Marysville team on the other side, head coach Sam Davis knew that too.
“To tell you the truth, pretty much what we got, a really well-coached team with really good players that have been here before,” he said when asked about what he expected coming into this matchup with the Monarchs.
Marysville jumped out an early 8-0 lead on the back of a stifling press that did not allow Watterson past halfcourt for the first two minutes. Senior Addy Tweed helped get the ball rolling with two early steals leading to points for the Monarchs while scoring nine of her team-high 16 points in the first. The press that Marysville employed was the one thing that Watterson head coach Sam Davis knew his team had to handle.
“The key I thought was if we could break the pressure, it caused us a lot of problems, but we were capable of doing it,” Davis explained after the game. They showed that not only could they handle it, but they could thrive against it, finding different ways to break it and get some good looks at the hoop as well.
